Mount Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church : Our History!
Pastor Waldo Lindberg was the Mission Developer of Mount Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church. Invitations were offered and participants began worshipping at the University Place Community Center and Masonic Lodge in 1957. On December 7, 1958 the congregation was chartered with approximately 200 members. The original worship space was built in 1958 and a Christian Education Wing was added in 1964. Folding chairs were used until the late sixties when one-half of the pews were purchased. The remaining pews were added at a later date. In 1985 the altar area was extensively remodeled with new furnishings, allowing greater light and functionality. The piano and organ were moved from the rear to the front. In 1998, a Fund Drive, “Renewing for You,” was initiated, which resulted in the development of a "Master Plan", centralization of staff offices, handicap accessibility, new gathering space, bathrooms and a multipurpose room. Ground breaking occurred in October of 1999 with a project cost of $1.1 million. Current mortgage is approximately $575,976.70 at an interest rate of 6.25%. The Master Plan calls for a new sanctuary and parking lot on the upper portions of our property. The sanctuary will seat approximately 250-300 worshippers and include a choir space and music room. Estimated project cost: $2.5 million.
