August 2010: "Compassionate Observer"

E-mail Print

The bumper sticker said, “Compassionate Observer;” a bit oxymoronic.  Are we compassionate observers?  Do we observe, that is keep, compassion by practicing it, actually suffering with another; feeling the pain and problems of another?  Or do we simply observe compassion; i.e. watch it or see it, but keep ourselves safe and distant from it?

July 2010: "It's Official"

E-mail Print
A bud on a plant becomes a flower, or a blossom becomes a ripened fruit, making it official; public, visible and real.  What’s the word on the street?  What’s the talk about town?  Rumor has it that so and so have been dating seriously and are about to announce their engagement.  The long anticipated event is about to become a social reality; private matters are about to become public knowledge.  The final out is recorded on the baseball field making the game and outcome official; i.e. in the books. What is it that makes something or someone “official”?

June 2010: "The Mind of Christ"

E-mail Print

St. Paul, writing an epistle of joy to his beloved friends in Philippi, offers these words of hope and exhortation: “Because there is encouragement in Christ, because there is consolation from love, because there is koinonia in the Spirit, and because there is compassion and sympathy, therefore complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.  Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves.  Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others.  Have this mind among yourselves which is already yours in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:1-5).

May 2010: "Sabbath Thoughts"

E-mail Print
Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy.  What does this mean for us?  Martin Luther replies, “We are to fear and love God, so that we do neglect God’s Word and the preaching of it; but regard it as holy and gladly hear and learn it.”  Sabbath is about keeping; keeping faith and keeping holy.  Keeping is not just about obedience.  If something is kept, it is treasured; as in a keepsake.  When we hold something in our hearts we consider it to have value and worth.  The Sabbath is meant to be kept.  The Sabbath keeps us!

April 2010: "Numbering Our Days"

E-mail Print
How do we number our days and week?  Many people live for Friday (TGIF).  Some people resent Sunday evening, seeing it as the climax of the weekend, signaling the return of another work week.  Recently I overheard a conversation between two members of Mount Cross.  A young man in our congregation was asked, “How’s your Sunday going?”  He replied, “Well it’s the end of the week and I’ve got school tomorrow.”  I was walking in the hall and offered a passing comment: “Sunday is the first day of the week, the beginning of the week, not the last day.”  Am I accurate or in error?  It all depends on how one does the counting.  How do we number our days?
